UX/UI Designer

The Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity) works to reduce poverty and broaden opportunity by advancing the use of data and evidence in program and policy design, service delivery, and budget decisions. We partner with the Mayor’s Office for Talent and Workforce Development to manage a growing portfolio of workforce products including Working NYC, a website with information about workforce programs / services and employment opportunities for job seekers. The next phase of work will focus on continuous user experience enhancements to Working NYC and the launch of a front door for employers.

We are looking for an experienced and technically fluent UX/UI Designer, to support the next phase of work on the City’s digital workforce strategy. You’ll be designing the user experience for a new digital product and supporting the expansion of Working NYC.

This is a full-time, contract position with benefits for one year.


  Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and test the user experience and front end design of a new digital product; leveraging in-depth product research preexisting branding and design patterns.
  • Develop user journeys, system maps, mockups, and prototypes that clearly illustrate how products or services function; collaborating in tandem with the content and research teams.
  • Incorporate user feedback into the digital product design and management process.
  • Develop distributable user interface (UI) design systems for digital products and services.
  • Update and maintain design pattern library components and documentation.
  • Support the development of additional assets, including icons, logos, photography selection, branding, and visual marketing assets.

Experience working closely with communities who are engaging with public services and programs and/or has lived-experience engaging with public services and programs.

Experience in policy, government or non-profit, in particular with low-income and vulnerable youth and families is a plus.

Experience in user interface (UI) design and development.

Experience working with design systems.

Experience leveraging user experience (UX) research.

Proficiency with modern design tools, such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and design process tools such as Miro.

Create solutions balancing user needs, business objectives, and practicality.

Some programming language proficiency in HTML, CSS.

  Benefits and Compensation

This is a full-time, contract position with benefits for one year.

The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $95,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
