Product Management Fellow (My File NYC)

The City of New York is piloting a new open source digital tool, My File NYC that allows residents to store and share documents for social services. The pilot’s goals are to understand if a tool like this can be an effective way for residents to have better control of their personal information, reduce the time for establishing eligibility for benefits, and reduce the repetition of the document upload process each time residents apply for services.

This is a paid four month fellowship with the potential to extend. Fellows will be coached and learn about product development in government, while contributing to work that impacts millions of New Yorkers. This Fellowship is being offered in collaboration with the Digital Impact and Governance Initiative at New America, our partners on My File NYC.

  Responsibilities

We are looking for a Product Management Fellow to support the ongoing operations of the pilot, including:

  • Working with product manager/director, designer, and engineers to plan and facilitate sprints .
  • Planning and perform QA.
  • Reviewing and organizing user feedback, turning it into actionable items for the team to work on.
  • Preparing pilot reports, using qualitative data, feedback from users, city workers, and other input methods.
  • Supporting the planning and participating in multichannel user feedback methods / sessions.
  • Supporting the development of an evaluation framework.
  • Producing and maintaining documentation: backlog, product specs/guides, tickets, wikis, etc.

Experience working closely with communities who are engaging with public services and programs and/or has lived-experience engaging with public services and programs.

Experience in policy, government or non-profit, in particular with low-income and vulnerable youth and families is a plus.

Previous experience with product management, project management, or content design and management involving the design and development of technology projects.

Ability to develop metrics and produce reports for products and initiatives.

Ability to turn user research insights and data into new product features or enhancements.

Technical and design fluency to support product vision and development.

Interest in using plain language to help residents access and interact with government services.

Comfortable working with vulnerable populations, including in-person or virtual engagements, handling sensitive client data.

  Education and Experience

Fellowships are open to current college or graduate students and recent graduates with an interest in these disciplines: product management and development, content design and management, civic tech, public policy, and social impact.

  Benefits and Compensation

The fellowship pays a $4,000 - $5,000 stipend per month and is managed by our partners with New America.
