Design Fellow - Designed by Community

A Design Fellowship with our team is an opportunity to grow your technical expertise while working on projects that help improve the lives of millions of New Yorkers.

We are currently seeking fellowship candidates with a growing visual portfolio that includes demonstration of creative communication methods which may include documentary filmmaking, photography, graphic design, and a strong interest in storytelling and strategic communications. Additional skills of interest might include conducting interviews and creative content development (success stories, blog posts, website content).

This fellowship will focus on providing support to the Designed by Community Program, an initiative aimed at fostering codesign for a digital access project with a community-based partner. Fellowships are temporary, paid positions that entail a minimum four day/week commitment starting November 2022 - April 2023.


  Responsibilities

Based on your skills and interests, responsibilities will include:

  • Generate ideas and identify opportunities to develop content in support of our Designed by Community storytelling and communications strategy.
  • Effectively manage relationships and plan activities for collaborative sessions throughout the DxC program.
  • Lead the production of storytelling, narrative, and visual assets for the Designed by Community program.
  • Use content creation and editing software (such as iMovie and Adobe Photoshop/InDesign) to create quality content.
  • Develop presentation deck templates and social media templates for the Service Design Studio and larger NYC Opportunity office as time allows.
  • Other work as determined within the scope of this role by the Design Director.

Experience working closely with communities who are engaging with public services and programs and/or has lived-experience engaging with public services and programs.

Experience in policy, government or non-profit, in particular with low-income and vulnerable youth and families is a plus.

Desire to use storytelling to uplift and empower community-led initiatives. Demonstrates creative communication and visual design skills with a growing portfolio.

Working knowledge of intermediate- to advanced-level equipment (DSLR camera, video, audio recorder, microphones).

Enjoys creative writing and carries the ability to develop narrative and communications to promote existing work.

Technical and design fluency and project organization to support product vision and development.

Ability to develop new design concepts, graphics and layouts within an existing brand.

Developing skills in iMovie and Adobe Photoshop/InDesign, Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Miro, and Microsoft Office and Google Suite to create new assets and build upon existing assets.

  Education and Experience

Fellowships are open to post-high school, undergraduate, graduate, or other training program students and recent graduates with a background or interest in storytelling, graphic design, and/or strategic communications.

  Benefits and Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is $22/hr.
