Design Fellow

A Design Fellowship with our team is an opportunity to grow your technical expertise while working on projects that help improve the lives of millions of New Yorkers. We are currently seeking fellowship candidates with a growing visual portfolio that includes demonstration of graphic design and UX/UI skills, social media visualization,and a strong interest in storytelling and strategic communications. Projects will focus on storytelling the delivery, on-going success, and continuous improvement of design within a government context.

Fellowships are temporary, paid positions that entail a minimum four day/week commitment starting October 18, 2021 – April 18, 2022.


Based on your skills and interests, responsibilities will include:

  • Evolve the Designed by Community Program brand, and produce new assets to complement our Civic Service Design Tools + Tactics.
  • Lead the production of a Designed by Community Microsite, including the UX/UI elements and content strategy.
  • Develop presentation deck templates and social media templates for the Service Design Studio and larger NYC Opportunity office.
  • Co-lead strategic communications and storytelling around the Designed by Community Fellowship Program and other Studio projects.
  • Work with Designers on staff to create project deliverables.
  • Other work as determined within the scope of this role by the Design Director.

Commitment to the mission of advancing greater equality and opportunity through human-centered design practices in government.

Experience working closely with communities who are engaging with public services and programs and/or has lived-experience engaging with public services and programs.

Experience in policy, government or non-profit, in particular with low-income and vulnerable youth and families is a plus.

Demonstrates graphic and user experience design skills with a growing portfolio.

Ability to develop new design concepts, graphics and layouts within an existing brand.

Enjoys writing and carries the ability to develop narrative and communications to promote existing work.

Technical and design fluency to support product vision and development.

Developing skills in Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Miro, and Microsoft Office and Google Suite to create new assets and build upon existing assets.

  Education and Experience

Fellowships are open to undergraduate, graduate, or other training program students and recent graduates with a background or interest in graphic design, product design, and/or strategic communications.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to provide sponsorship to fellows.
