Data Fellow

Within NYC Opportunity, the Enterprise Data Solutions team takes innovative approaches to linking data in a meaningful way, as a means to help inform decision making by City-wide stakeholder groups, including leadership, agencies, providers and clients. EDS views data as a protected asset that can be responsibly leveraged across digital products to support analytical initiatives, facilitate knowledge sharing, and develop policy strategy.

The Data Fellow will support the development of content for our Metadata Catalog project. The NYC Opportunity’s new Metadata Catalog is a designed to be digital, searchable repository of information about data sets and systems that we curate, manage or share with City agencies, community-based organizations (CBOs) and the public. The catalog is intended to give researchers, analysts and developers detailed information about known sources of data including lineage, structure, formats, fields, appropriate uses and any governing legal requirements.

We are looking for for recent graduate students who have an interest in the library and archival sciences, information management and data science to become a fellow on our team. Fellowships are intended to be hands-on, paid fellowships. Fellows must be able to commit to working for a minimum of 9 months, full or part time, with a minimum of three days per week.


  Responsibilities

The Data Fellow will be responsible for working with NYC Opportunity staff and selected stakeholders to research, validate and document new and existing information about administrative data assets that can be published and shared in the catalog.

Responsibilities include:

  • Adapt existing written documentation on data sets and systems to conform to the metadata catalog.
  • Work with external agency data teams to document information about their data sets or guide them on how to use the metadata catalog to create their own entries.
  • Take an active interest in learning about data that City agencies use and need.
  • Develop standards and conventions for documenting data sets and systems in a uniform manner.
  • Work with our digital Product and Design teams to suggest design improvements.
  • Respect and promote core principles of data privacy and ethics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Commitment to the mission of advancing greater equality and opportunity.

Experience working closely with communities who are engaging with public services and programs and/or has lived-experience engaging with public services and programs.

Experience in policy, government or non-profit, in particular with low-income and vulnerable youth and families is a plus.

Experience working in a collaborative environment.

Excellent written, communication, and organization skills.

Ability to think critically and detail oriented.

  Education and Experience

Fellowships are open to undergraduate, graduate, and recent graduates in library, archival, information science, and related data disciplines.

  Benefits and Compensation

The hourly rate for the fellowship is $22/hr and does not offer health benefits.
